On November 25, the mobilization meeting for the start of the reconstruction and expansion project of the Nansha-Zhuhai section of the Guangzhou-Macao Expressway was held in Zhongshan City. The Nansha to Zhuhai section of the Guangzhou-Macao Expressway was opened to traffic in December 1999. It is the first inland expressway straight to the Macao region.

Although little experience for reference of early expressway construction can be drawn on, the builders broke through a number of technical difficulties, passing the handover and acceptance with the highest score in Guangdong Province expressway construction; and the expressway became a veritable "model road". As an important part of the "A" shaped main development in the core area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), with the rapid growth of traffic, it is urgent to improve the traffic service capacity of this expressway.

The first "six to ten" expressway in Guangdong, significantly improves the traffic capacity

The reconstruction and expansion project of the Nansha-Zhuhai section of the Guangzhou-Macao Expressway has been incorporated in“the 14th Five-Year” Plan for Comprehensive Transport System of Guangdong Province. The project starts at the Tanwei junction interchange in Huangge Town of Nansha District of Guangzhou City, passes through Huangge Town and Hengli Town of Nansha District of Guangzhou City, Delta Town, Minzhong Street, Gangkou Town, Torch Development Zone and Nanlang Street of Zhongshan City, and ends at Zhuhai Toll Station, Nanglang Street, Cuiheng New District, Zhongshan City, with a mileage of about 50.43 kilometers. The project is the first "six to ten" expressway in Guangdong, with ten interchanges and one service area. The whole line is expected to be completed and open to traffic by the end of 2027.

After the completion of the project, the traffic capacity and service level will be greatly improved.

Relying on intelligent information technology to create an upgraded model project in the GBA

Located in the hinterland of the Pearl River Delta, the Nansha-Zhuhai section of the Guangzhou-Macao Expressway is an important traffic artery in GBA. The reconstruction and expansion project is faced with a number of difficulties: the existing road was built early and many bridges have deep soft foundations which are difficult to splice; traffic volume is high, so it is demanding to keep smooth flow and safety; with dense pipelines along the line, intersecting with 6 provincial highways, 22 municipal main roads, it is complicated to give a transformation program; the route spans 11 main waterways, and some of the bridges crossing the waterways are designed to meet the navigation requirements of Class I waterways, which makes it difficult to ensure the safety control of the unimpeded water and land transport.

"In order to effectively solve the construction problems, the project will follow the principle of 'no interruption and less impact', consider the traffic diversion of the regional road network and the reconstruction and expansion of traffic organization of the sections in a comprehensive way, make use of a variety of intelligent information technology for controlling the construction site and traffic organization, so that the impact of the expansion on traffic and operations can be minimized. We will inherit the spirit of the model, take safety, quality, service, wisdom and green as the construction concept, be a good pioneer of the reconstruction and expansion, and strive to make this project a reconstruction and expansion model for GBA.”, said Liu Zhi, deputy director of the Guangzhou-Zhuhai Section of the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway Reconstruction and Expansion Management Office.

At present, the project is carrying out the site selection and construction for the project department, steel processing plant, mixing plant and other temporary facilities. After completion and opening to traffic, the project will strongly strengthen the transport links between Nansha, Zhongshan and Zhuhai, Guangzhou, which will empower and speed up the interconnection of GBA, and is of great significance to accelerate the construction of "1-hour traffic circle" in GBA.
