Shipping Salary Growth Continues to Decline in 2016

On October 25th, according to2016 Survey of Salaries and Welfare in Shanghai Shipping and Logistics Industry(hereinafter refer to as “Survey”) by Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE), the average salary adjustment rate in shipping and logistics industry declined to 6.4% in 2016, 0.7% lower than that in 2015, hitting a seven-year low.

The Survey provided comprehensive data of salaries and talents policies for enterprises, with emphasis on income, welfare and bonus of key talents. At the same time, the Survey also listed common salary data, salary adjustment, enterprise human capital strategies concerning employee turnover rate, floating bonus benchmark, as well general income, regular income, and basic salary in nearly 240 shipping logistics enterprises.

It was the twelfth consecutive year that SSE has carried out shipping and logistics industry research. “The accurate salary information allowed price leverage in market economy to give full play in in talents resource, and to play an active role in optimal allocation of shipping talent.” said Liu Yue, Manager of Information Department in SSE.

Entering 2016, BDI index rose gradually after its downturn early this year, as if indicating that the market was well on the way to recovery. However, the situation of overcapacity would not be changed in a short time, and the state of low volatility in shipping market would continue. Shipping market was instable, and the performance of shipping corporations differed. Several reasons could lead to such contrast, and the organization and utilization of human resource in corporations was one of the main factors.

From a long-term practice, salary survey could not only help shipping corporations establish salary standard, which can attract talents and reduce labor cost at the same time, and also be helpful to bridge the salary gap between different positions and levels, improving salary system on outer competitiveness and inner fairness, which is important in effective talents retaining, and promotion of standardization and scientification of salary management.

It is informed that there were 98 shipping and logistics corporations participating in the Survey this year. Compared with former years, certain improvement had been made in production cycle and content, such as refining the professional grade of the same position, dividing the original job data into primary, skilled, senior three dimensions for data writing, which adapted to the need of an elaborate division of labor in large companies; adding urban salary index to meet the salary setting demands by large-sized group in different cities.
